Dimapur:-Dimapur District was upgraded from Sub-division to full fledged District in December 1997. The district consist of Dimapur and Niuland sub-divisions, bifurcated from Kohima. The proposed headquarters for the District is at Chumukedima. At present, the headquarter is situated at Dimapur town. The District is bounded by Kohima district on the south and east, Karbi Anglong district of Assam on the West. The DAB (Disputed Area Belt) in the north borders Golaghat district of Assam.
The district has a heterogeneous population with the majority comprising of Naga tribes from all over Nagaland. The total population of the Dimapur district as per the 2001 census is 3,08,382.
Dimapur town is the magnet around which the economic and developmental activities of the district are centred. It is not only the most important town for Nagaland but also the commercial centre for the region. It is one of the fastest developing townships in the North-East. The town is also a gateway to Nagaland and Manipur. It is an important railhead and the only airport in Nagaland. The National Highway 39 that connects Kohima, Imphal and the Mynmar border at Moreh runs through Dimapur.
